PREFACE TO THE PROCEEDINGS

The European Conference "PHYSICS OF MAGNETISM 96" was held on June 24-28, 1996 in Poznań. The Conference was organized jointly by the Institute of Molecular Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Physics of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. It was the eighth conference of the series organized every 3 years since 1975.

The present Conference was meant as an international forum for the presentation and discussion of novel scientific ideas, in a field of broadly understood magnetic phenomena and new magnetic materials, with special emphasis on the following subjects:

- Films, Multilayers and Nanostructures,

- Correlated Electrons,

- High- Tc Superconductivity,

- Electronic Structure.

The main objective of the Conference was to bring together scientists and technologists from the Western, Central and Eastern European countries involved in research and application of new magnetic materials and high temperature superconductors.

The program of the conference consisted of 21 invited talks, presented by distinguished physicists from Europe, USA and Japan. Besides, more than 280 contributions were presented in either poster or oral form.

The invited talks provided by the Authors, as well as 116 selected contributed papers are published in the Conference Proceedings, consisting of the present and two forthcomming volumes of Acta Physica Polonica A.

The major sponsors of the Conference, Committee for Scientific Research, Ministry of National Education, Committee of Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Stefan Batory Foundation, International Science Foundation, Wielkopolski Bank Kredytowy S.A. and Lech Browary Wielkopolski are kindly acknowledged.

We are grateful to the Editors of Acta Physica Polonica A for their kind agreement to publish the Proceedings in the present volumes(*) .
