The combination of electron-spin resonance (ESR) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) allows us
to build atomic-scale structures on ultraclean surfaces and study their quantum coherent properties. In this
introduction I want to show the development of ESR-STM over the past decade and recent advances in
controlling individual electron and nuclear spin states [1].
