Badania
Cele badawcze
Oprócz badania typowych układów fizycznych (multiferroiki, ferromagnetyki, związki międzymetaliczne, kwazikryształy, szkła metaliczne, domieszkowane ferroelektryki, relaksory i przewodniki superjonowe) pracownicy Zakładu prowadzą szeroką, interdyscyplinarną współpracę z naukowcami z innych dziedzin badawczych: chemia, biologia, farmacja i medycyna. Celem badań jest między innymi detekcja i określenie rodzajów paramagnetycznych defektów radiacyjnych oraz wolnych rodników generowanych przez czynniki stresogenne w materii ożywionej.
Profil badawczy
Problematyka naukowa Zakładu koncentruje się na badaniu własności magnetycznych i elektrycznych oraz poznawaniu mechanizmów prowadzących do przemian fazowych w ciałach stałych. Głównymi metodami badawczymi są elektronowy rezonans magnetyczny (elektronowy rezonans paramagnetyczny, podwójny rezonans elektronowo-jądrowy, rezonans ferromagnetyczny) oraz spektroskopia impedancyjna.

- Zbadanie wpływu domieszkowania na przewodnictwo elektryczne i własności ferroiczne związków Me3X(SO4)2. Wyjaśnienie mechanizmu prowadzącego do wzrostu wartości przewodnictwa w niskoprzewodzącej fazie przewodników superprotonowych (NH4)3H(SO4)2:Mn2+ [W. Bednarski et al., Solid State Ionics 179, 1974 (2008)] i Rb3H(SO4)2:Mn2+ [A. Ostrowski, W. Bednarski, J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 21, 205401 (2009)]. Odkrycie niskotemperaturowego stanu szkła polarnego z krótkozasięgowym uporządkowaniem w krysztale Rb3H(SO4)2:Mn2+ [W. Bednarski et al., J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 22, 225901 (2010)]
- Określenie struktury krystalicznej i własności nowego ditiolenowego kompleksu złota, które zostały poparte obliczeniami struktury pasmowej kryształu. Własności elektryczne silnie zależą od ciśnienia. Własności magnetyczne pokazują metaliczny charakter. Elektronowy rezonans magnetyczny jest typowy dla przewodzącego materiału. Badania te sugerują dalszy kierunek modyfikacji chemicznej kompleksu w celu uzyskania molekularnego materiału o wyższym przewodnictwie [N. Bellem et al., J. Am. Chem. Soc. 131, 16967 (2009)]
- Kontrolowanie destrukcji kryształów TGS przez ciecz przenoszącą ciśnienie hydrostatyczne do 2.5 GPa. Wykazano, że powyżej 1.8 GPa następuje nieodwracalna degradacja próbek na obszary o wymiarach krytycznych dla zachowania porządku dalekiego zasięgu (polaryzacji spontanicznej). Układ zachowuje się wtedy w funkcji temperatury i ciśnienia jak typowy relaksor, a powyżej 2.5 GPa jak superparaelektryk. Na podstawie danych ciśnieniowych z parametrów ściśliwości zaproponowano efekt wpływu tzw. objętości krytycznej na zanik polaryzacji [J. Stankowski et al., J. Non-Cryst. Solids 356, 1305 (2010)]
- Określenie anizotropii zbadanych własności fizycznych (magnetyzm, przewodnictwo elektryczne i termiczne, siła termoelektryczna i współczynnik Halla) pomiędzy płaszczyzną kwazikrystaliczną a kierunkiem periodycznym w dwuwymiarowym dekagonalnym aproksymancie Al13Fe4 i jego pochodnej Al13(Fe, Ni)4. Odkrycie nieporządku strukturalnego w Al13(Fe, Ni)4 na podstawie badań monokryształów otrzymanych metodą Czochralskiego [P. Popčević et al., Phys. Rev. B 81, 184203 (2010)]
- Odkrycie natury niskotemperaturowego stanu podstawowego, będącego fazą nieergodycznego szkła dipolowego w ferroelektrycznym relaksorze Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 (PMN). Wyjaśnienie przyczyny nieciągłej zależności polaryzacji w funkcji pola elektrycznego i temperatury, która to jest konsekwencją przejścia fazowego pierwszego rodzaju ze stanu szklistego do ferroelektrycznego. Nieciągłość stwierdzono na podstawie pomiarów ciepła właściwego o wysokiej zdolności rozdzielczej (stabilizacja temperatury w pomiarze efektu elektrokalorycznego 0.1 mK) i polaryzacji [N. Novak et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 037601 (2012)]
- Zbadanie własności elektrycznych, magnetycznych i termicznych szklistych nanokompozytów porowatych z nanocząstkami magnetytu oraz ferroelektrykami KNO3 lub NaNO2 wypełniającymi pory. Pokazanie, że wielkość porów w szkłach porowatych z wbudowanymi nanocząstkami magnetycznymi tylko nieznacznie zmienia rozmiar nanocząstek magnetycznych oraz nie ma wpływu na temperaturę TV przemiany fazowej Verwey’a. Wykazanie, że istotny wpływ na własności magnetyczne szkieł ma wprowadzenie do porów w szkłach magnetycznych nanocząstek ferroelektrycznych, które obniżają temperaturę TV [A. Ciżman et al., Composites: Part B 64, 16 (2014)]
