Abstract:Mass transport of water and gases in the graphitic nanoenvironment usually reveals phenomena that are often counterintuitive and unique in nanoscale. For example, water flows in a graphitic pipe of carbon nanotube as narrow as sub-2 nanometers can exceed predictions of the Hagen-Poiseuille formalism by some three orders of magnitude. Gas flows in this nanoenvironment can also exceed the Knudsen flow prediction by an order of magnitude. Chemical addition to the nanotube entrance can create rare combination of fast transport and large selectivity, finding potential usage in water purification, desalination, and gas separations. In this talk, I will present an interesting story of synthesizing carbon nanomaterials, making membrane platform out of them, and characterizing the ultrafast and selective mass transports in the graphitic nanoenvironment.
