Linear and Non-linear Resonance Effects for Controlling Spin-Wave Propagation
Spin waves, being coherent oscillations of magnetic order whose quanta are magnons, are
considered a promising platform for beyond-CMOS information technologies. Their potential
arises from low energy costs, absence of Joule heating, and wavelengths shorter than microwaves
of the same frequency. However, realizing practical magnonic devices requires reliable methods
for controlling spin-wave propagation. In this seminar, I will present results from my doctoral
research on novel control mechanisms based on resonance phenomena. Linear resonance effects in
magnonic interferometers enable phase control and redirection of spin waves via excitation of
eigenmodes by obliquely incident waves. Non-linear resonance, on the other hand, leads to inelastic
scattering on localized edge modes, producing new spin waves with shifted frequencies and altered
trajectories. These processes give rise to lateral displacements analogous to the Goos-Hänchen
effect, amplitude variations reminiscent of Wood’s anomaly, and in certain regimes a cascade of
non-linear events generating plane spin waves at the system’s edge. Together, these results
demonstrate powerful new strategies for manipulating spin-wave propagation and highlight
potential routes toward functional magnonic components.
