Nobel Laureat visiting IMP PAS

On September 1, 2023, we hosted Professor Klaus von Klitzing at the Institute – the Nobel Prize winner in Physics “for the discovery of the quantized Hall effect”. During the meeting, our researchers had the opportunity to take part in a conversation with the eminent guest, talk about research conducted at the Institute, and listen to a short presentation by Prof. von Klitzing. The meeting took place in a great atmosphere, conducive to interesting discussions and information exchange. We would like to thank the world-renowned scientist for his time and interest in our Institute. We would also like to thank everyone who was involved in the organization of this unique event.

Prof. Klaus von Klitzing was born in 1943 in Środa Wielkopolska. He studied physics at the Technische Universität in Braunschweig. He obtained his doctorate and habilitation at the University in Würzburg. In the years 1980-1984, he was the Professor at the Technische Universität in München. He is still associated with the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart, where he was the director and also headed the Department of Low Dimensional Electronic Systems.

Prof. Klaus von Klitzing received the Nobel Prize in Physics (1985 r.) “for the discovery of the quantized Hall effect” observed in two-dimensional electronic systems exposed to low temperatures and strong magnetic fields (https://www.nobelprize.org/prizes/physics/1985/press-release/). The discovered phenomenon provides a definition of a new practical standard of electrical resistance based on the quantization of resistance as determined by the so-called von Klitzing constant RK = h/e2 ≈ 26 kΩ. The quantum Hall effect was used to build a model of electrical resistance.
